I Will Not Be Shaken

This session's song is Psalm 16: A Michtam of David. This is a psalm that David wrote out of his own feelings and experiences and in his own style. Yet the message and the very words of it were inspired by God. What we have is Holy Scripture, the Word of God. What is a Michtam, and is it important?

It is probably from a word that means “to cover”, like when you cover your mouth to tell someone a secret, so no one else can hear. There are 6 psalms called Michtams. All were written when David was in a dangerous situation. This is a different kind of “fight song”, because it is sung in secret, quietly.

Because the lyrics of this song are similar to David’s statements in 1 Samuel 26, we think it was written out of that situation at a time when King Saul was hunting David, trying to kill him.
