How Can I Keep My Kids From Walking Away From The Faith?
Sometimes when a child become a young adult, there are intellectual doubts that arise when their faith is challenged and they feel that they can’t give a satisfactory answer. So, they abandon church, put the Bible back on the shelf, and walk away from the faith. Maybe the church has dropped the ball in not preparing them for that challenge.
Sometimes a young person does not have relationships in the church with leaders whom they feel care about them, leaders who keep up meaningful contact with them – so, they don’t stay. Again, that may be the church’s fault; it may also be the young person’s fault for not doing their part – but they walk away instead.
Sometimes it is just the pull of the world, the power of sin, and the schemes of Satan that draws them away.
Is that preventable? Is there a way to guarantee that your kids don’t walk away from the faith? Quick answer: No. The choices your child makes when they are no longer under your authority are absolutely out of your control. You can’t make their choices or have faith for them. You can’t love Jesus for them. There is no formula that magically guarantees their faith.
Then why this message? Because there are things you can do to provide an environment in your family where the faith of your children can thrive. Every Christian parent would love to hear others say about their children what Paul said about Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:5. But turn that verse around…that is the fear of many parents. So, let's talk about our kids and our faith.
