Finance Director

Organizational Relationships
This staff person serves under the supervision of the Operations Pastor and works closely with the Business Office staff, Counting Committee volunteers, and Budget and Finance Committee.

Summary of Position
This position is responsible for the production of monthly financial reports presented to Church leadership and external users, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and ensuring adequate internal controls designed to reduce risk and increase the accuracy of financial reporting. This position requires sound accounting and financial management principles and practices, and ensures that the Church complies with all federal, state, and local laws.

Purpose
The Finance Director is responsible for providing leadership and coordination of Church financial planning and reporting functions to help support and fulfill the mission and vision of First Baptist Church of Sevierville.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform the accounting operations of the Church, which include directing, managing, supervising, planning, and coordinating all activities and operations of the Business Office.
  • Responsible for the preparation of appropriate and accurate financial records submitted on a timely basis for the Church and Mother's Day Out.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and submit them to all appropriate staff, committee members, congregation, and external users.
  • Responsible for all monthly closing procedures, including journal entries, bank reconciliations, and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Provide direct assistance in preparing all information needed for external audit and communication with the auditors.
  • Participate in the annual budget preparation and review process and monitor revenues and expenditures regularly.
  • Direct and supervise personnel in the data management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and contribution processing and reporting functions.
  • Direct and supervise volunteers assisting with the church's financial activities.
  • Manage all activities related to human resources including the accounting and recordkeeping for new hires, terminated employees, insurance, retirement, and maintain compliance with
  • federal, state and local laws.
  • Prepare bi-weekly payroll. Prepare all payroll tax returns and ensure compliance with all federal and state reporting requirements.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Business Office, including training, supervision, and evaluation of financial staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining all modules of the computerized accounting system of the Church which integrates with the membership system. Assist Church staff with questions
  • they have regarding the system.
  • Oversee the maintenance of fixed asset records and control.
  • Communicate with Church vendors and other outside agencies on behalf of the Church.
  • Monitor cash balances as they relate to cash needs. Transfer funds as deemed necessary.
  • Monitor restricted fund accounts.
  • Manage accounting policies and procedures and provide effective internal financial controls.
  • Monitor current accounting pronouncements, trends, and practices and recommend policy relative to these changes in the legal/regulatory environment

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, CPA preferred
  • Minimum 10 years' accounting experience in private industry (prefer minimum 2 years public accounting).
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office.
  • Proven abilities in corporate finances, accounting, and payroll related costs (nonprofit preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and leadership skills.
  • Strong technical/analytical skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with state and federal employment law preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
